What Does Eco-Smart PPE Really Mean?

Other considerations can also come into play. Is high-visibility equipment a benefit? For instance, this might be especially valuable on a busy warehouse floor with heavy traffic. Would color-coded, standardized equipment promote solidarity among employees? Your PPE program does not have to be static. Regular dialogue with employees is a good way to understand the efficacy of your PPE, and provides an opportunity for consistent improvement. Specializing equipment to your workplace, and, equally importantly, your employees is an opportunity to maximize safety. Is High-recycled Content Equipment Equally Durable?
Another choice available to a safety manager when considering PPE is material, including recycled materials. This provides a number of benefits, including recyclability and benefits to sustainability initiatives. But in a hazardous environment, what matters most is performance.
Though the importance and value of sustainable materials has been steadily increasing in the last few decades, there is still sometimes a latent skepticism regarding recycled materials. Are they less durable? Does their being assembled from recycled materials mean that the materials are stressed or fatigued from previous use? In a word, no. PPE made from recycled materials must meet the same ANSI standards as PPE made from virgin materials. This means that recycled products retain all the benefits of traditional safety products, while adding the extra benefits of environmental stewardship and helping to meet sustainability goals.
Some Common/Essential PPE
Safety Gloves: Safety gloves are essential in any workplace needing hand protection. Gloves come in a variety of different configurations. Does your workplace need cut-resistance, or non-conductivity? Would flexibility or added grip be beneficial? Choosing the right gloves for each specialized task is crucial, again emphasizing the need for a thorough hazard assessment.
Eyewear: Safety glasses and goggles protect the eyes from a variety of potential threats, including UV light, dust and other irritants, chemicals, liquid and fog. Some considerations include impact-resistance, temperature, and style; for instance, would wrap-around glasses be safer, and how secure of a fit is necessary?
Hard Hats: Hard hats are required wherever potential head danger is present, including by impact, falls, potentially loose objects, and electrical shock or burns. All hard hats must meet ANSI standards. In addition, there are many other choices to be made. Would venting, glare protection or moisture control be beneficial?
