WHAT is GHS?

GHS, or Globally Harmonized System, is NOT a new OSHA regulation, but is a revised version of the original Hazard Communication Standard (CFR 1910.1200). It is intended to provide a global standard for the classification and labeling of chemicals.

WHY GHS?

Exposure to hazardous chemicals is one of the most serious dangers facing American workers today. Revising OSHA's Hazard Communication Standard will improve the quality, consistency and clarity of hazard information that workers receive. It makes it safer for workers to do their jobs and easier for employers (on a global basis) to stay competitive in a global marketplace. The new revision will align the standard with the United Nations' Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals.

Important Dates for Compliance

December 1, 2013:

Employers must train employees on the new label elements and the new SDS (Safety Data Sheets) format

June 1, 2015:

Comply with ALL modified provisions of the final standard, with the exception that distributors may ship products labeled under the old system until 12/1/2015. (Applies to chemical manufacturers, importers, distributors and employers)

June 1, 2016:

Update alternate workplace labeling and hazard communication programs as necessary, and provide additional employee training for newly identified physical or health hazards (Applies to employers)

Transition:

Comply with either the final standard, the current standard, or both. (Applies to all chemical manufactures, importers, distributors and employers)

GHS/SDS Station Signs
