Green strategies can’t be a “project”; it has to be an organization wide culture shift that is ongoing. Businesses that want to optimize their green business efforts will need to review every process in their organization and make permanent changes to those processes to be successful. Critical to permanent change is employee involvement, education and reinforcement. Make sure everyone is involved and committed from the executive management on down. It is also important to remember that going green for businesses is not only good for the environment but it can also save business money. If all the employees in the organization start printing and copying two-sided, paper consumption can be reduced by almost 50%! Now take that a step farther and assume they print 25% less due to keeping more electronic files. It adds up. When implementing green strategies, it is okay to start small and build on it. Start with a recycling program; move to paper conservation, begin researching which products purchased annually can be switched over to a recycled materials (signs, posters etc). Set up strategies and tactics based on your mission statement and pick an area and then get started. Starting with strategies that can also reduce annual costs is a great way to build momentum. Don’t forget that the “greening” of products and services can also generate incremental customer demand. Even in economically challenging times, all reports indicate the growing demand for green products is still holding steady or increasing.
